Sunday Special – Renegade Reinterpretations

Hello once again, guys, and welcome to another Sunday Special.

So now that we’ve just left the Gabriel Hawke snarking (*shudder*), we’ll be getting back to Parallel Realities soon enough. In that vein, I figured I might look around the Mass Effect section on fanfiction.net to search out some more AU fiction.

I’m sure most of you have noticed that one of my big complaints about Parallel Realities is that it doesn’t seem all that interested in actually being different from the canon it is based on, which is really bad for an AU fic. So I don’t think I’m incorrect if there are some people who might be asking me “well, Herr, what does a good Mass Effect AU look like”. (Well, okay, I haven’t been asked that question yet, but hush, I’m making a point.)

Well, it just so happens that I have the perfect fic to show you what a good AU fic set in Mass Effect would look like. So sit back and relax, ‘cause I’m about to talk your ear off about Renegade Reinterpretations.

Hello guys, and welcome to today’s Sunday Special.

Well, I felt in the mood to look for some Hunger Games fanfic to find something in another canon that I could snark at. So while looking for stuff, I encountered this fic.

Now, what is this fic, you might ask? Well, it’s a rather hilarious take on the Mary Sue as it applies to the Hunger Games continuum. How does it work?

Well, allow me to show you how.

Happy Saturday, Library Patrons!

Today we’re doing a Sunday Special, even though it’s Saturday.  We’re that sort of wacky around here.

Recently, another movie-based-on-a-book came out and, like thousands of others, I was curious what it was all about.  So, like a true bookworm, I got my hands on a copy of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  I finished it in just over two days and went on to devour the next two books over the course of a couple weeks.  I’ll be completely honest when I say I highly enjoyed the  books.  Despite the Sue-ness of the main character, the books held a gritty realness to them that made me actually weep for characters that died during the course of the novels.  The end wasn’t sunshine and roses; it was realistic for what was happening, in my opinion.

Sunday Special – Doomsday Scenario 4

I decided to cleanse my palette of the taste of that Guitar Hero fic by taking a look in my “good fics” folder, only to realise that I don’t really have that many good fics to share. It is unbelievably hard to find decent fics, like trying to locate a Raisinet in a vat of raw sewage. A very small Raisinet in a very big vat.

I did find something in my “potentially awesome” file; it’s a bit bigger in that it contains actual fics and isn’t just an empty folder.

The fic is titled Doomsday Scenario 4 and is by oftimeandspace, who has written several very good fics for Doctor Who and other series.  It is one of the thousands of Doctor Who fics clogging the Intertubes; seriously, if you Google “doctor who fanfiction” you get close to ten million hits. And many, many of them are highly improbable slashfics.

Sunday Special – English Pronunciation

A little while ago, one of our online friends from the YSaC community posted this fantastic article.  It’s essentially a poem on the bizarre pronunciation rules of the English language.  I suggest reading it out loud.  I was very near to dissolving into laughter halfway through and had to stop.  Give it a whirl and we’ll see you tomorrow!
