Hello again, fellow lovers of the badly mangled written word! Today I have an extra-special treat in store for you – it’s an Avatar fanfic!
That would be Avatar: the Last Airbender, the animated series that proved that American studios can do much better than SpongeBob and Regular Show but simply choose not to, and not the glowing blue dudes with the freaky ponytails. (There was also an excretable live-action movie based on the animated series, but I like to pretend that it doesn’t exist.)
As a fan of the series I could blather on and on about the complex story-lines, fantastical setting, or fully-developed characters, but I’m not going to because you’re not going to need to know any of that stuff. This little darling of a fic, The Bounty Hunter by Kataangfan001, is AU – for those of you who don’t want to click on the handy Dictionary of the Damned tab at the top of your screen, AU stands for Alternate Universe.
In theory, the author of an AU fic takes the characters from one story and inserts them into a different setting, retaining the original characters’ traits while having them interact with a new world. In practice, this very rarely succeeds. It usually results in characters that have the same names as the original ones but acting much differently. I anticipate many more AU fics being added to the shelves of the Library in the future.
And look – the author’s username is a portmanteau of two of the characters’ names! That’s a good sign, right?
Right?!?
I have Mr. Crowbar soaking in the tub – I’m trying to remove some troubling stains – so I’m going to try to go easy on the bashing today. I make no promises, though.
WARNING: This fic contains (poorly expressed) violent themes and adult language.
